AC Problems

I have a 2007 R320 and a 2008 GL320. Both have the IR Glass and the 3 zone AC. The R320 will get just as cold as the GL320 but it takes it about 15min vs 1-2min on the GL. The freon is at the right level so that leaves compressor clutch? Drier? Expansion Valve?

Any thoughts?

It's CFC free (according to the brochure), so there shouldn't be any freon in there. During this delay, does it actually blow cold or does it take a long time before cold comes out?

OK.... I always called R134a Freon. It doesn't seem cold. It's already 100F here in KS so it's hard to tell. It seems like once it finally decides to start working it cools down fairly quickly and gets cold.

Is the vehicle parked the entire time? Does it get better faster when moving or reved? I am not thinking of the set up, but doesit have 2 fans or one? Check to see if when the ac kicks, if the other fan turns on.

Speed doesn't seem to matter. It seems to take 10-15min no mater the revs or speed. We have been on the highway at 75MPH and still have to wait for it to kick in.

So its clearly the temperature not coming out of the vents as cold as the other vehicle?

Have you tried checking actual temps? If you dont have ir temp meter you could use a meat thermometer and see which moves the needle better.

You should be able to check the clutch on both. If the clutch is moving on both then I would think its more internal. Both belts good, cabin filters?
I would think you would have some delay because the r has more air to move. Whixh also means the interal components require more cold to neutralize. It should stillbe blowing cold.

I changed the cabin air filters as soon as I got it. The GL is a little bigger inside but the AC system is the same.

Just a word of warning...

Mine started doing that... figured it was just getting on in age... was going to test the system when I got home (I was in South Carolina with my kids).

On the way home in the middle of North Carolina the compressor blew... took out the serpentine belt and the whole AC system.

Two days and $2500 later it was fixed. Overall very impressed with Mercedes' handling of the whole thing..

My point... get the system checked by someone who knows automotive HVAC. A few hundred up front just may save you thousands later...
