Bad ABS sensor

Just replaced a bad driver side ABS sensor. The plastic cable clamp had broken and it was rubbing against the axle. It was a 5 minute job, I didn't even take the wheel off - just cranked the steering wheel all the way to the left and had plenty of room. I used a tie-wrap to compensate for the broken clamp.

Was it a fail? What tipped you off? CEL? Or did you just happen to be rolling around on the garage floor under the car?

Yes a complete fail. The wire inside was completely worn through. I started intermittently getting ABS and ESP error lights on the dash, and then they stayed permanently. No CEL though. I looked inside the wheel well and could see that the wire was damaged.
