Navagation Update Problems

Stupid me forgot to check the navigation when I purchased my 2008 R. When I finally rememebered there was no disc in the drive. Its wasn't purchased from an MB dealer and I called to see if they had the disc where I bought it from with no luck. I ended up purchasing a 2014 DVD disc which has the 06-08 MY R Class listed on the actual DVD so I don't think its a compatability issue.

When I insert the DVD it say navigation initializing and then a few moments later it says can not read disc. Not sure what is going on and before taking it to the dealer one of these days I was wondering if you need to update these in increments. I have no idea what year maps were last loaded into the system so is it possible than none have ever been done and I went from 2008 maps to 2014 maps and the DVD is looking for certain firmware/software updates that would have been installed between 2008 and 2014?

Maybe someone here has some insight on my current situation. Heck if someone has a 2008 or 2009 map DVD laying around let me know what you want for them.

Didn't purchase from eBay but not dealer either. Purchased from Bonanza from seller that has great feedback and is pretty much all he sells, maybe I got screwed who knows. It's definitely not a burned copy though and it looks very legit. Maybe I'll ask for a replacement copy to see how he reacts but I was wondering if skipping all those years is causing an issue.

Are you certain it's not a burned copy. Even if the disc has professional quality labelling it might not be legit. Check to see for the security etching on the inside ring on the disc, and the the underside (i.e. the side the laser reads) isn't any colour but silver/aluminum.

Here are some pics I just took of the disc. Tried to be as detailed as possible. Looks legit but I really have no idea.

Looks legit to me. I think there may be an update that needs to be performed before the newer maps will work.

Marc keeping my fingers crossed that it is something as simple as that. Was hoping to see if anyone came across this first hand, looks like I just have to go to dealer one day to see if someone in service can correct it, hopefully it's something simple.

I have the original DVD in mine, and I haven't been able to get any discs purchased from the internet to work either. I thought maybe it was just the discs, but I have read about a separate update DVD, but haven't been able to find it online. No confirmation though if that actually is the case.

If or when I get this resolved I'll update here.

Marc, question, the DVDs you have purchased did you also skip multiple years?

Yes, I have the original 2008 disc, and I tried to go straight to the 2015.

I read about needed updates on the MB Club of America site but that thread had no resolution posted so in the dark, but in a way it sounds like that may be the case since you are having a similar issue.

So glad we have a TomTom... or my phone... LOL...

Maybe contact the dealer and see if they will do the software updates, and how much.

josworth I almost always use Google Maps on my iPhone even in the Toyota Venza which probably has a superior Nav system compared to the older Merc, but I am a stickler for having everything functional.

So I ended up getting refunded for the other DVD I bought, and went to the MB dealer and bought the 2015 DVD, took about 5 minutes to update and works like a charm.

Moral of the story, beware lower priced discs on the internet.

That is expensive. I retrofitted my 08 with a used Navigation that came with the disc for around $600 (Mine R did not come with the Navigation).
I believe Navtec makes them. My 07 Acura RL Nav has a updated Nav disc that costs me only $99.

I agree it is expensive, but I have been unable to locate discs that are cheaper and actually work.

Well I had bought DVDs and they never worked, took out Navigation DVD drive, cleaned lens and no luck. Bought a Navigation DVD drive on eBay with a Nav DVD which was stated as guaranteed to work. Just finished installing and the culprit was a bad DVD drive as I now have navigation functioning. Since the seller sent a 2005.1 map and it worked I decided to try the other DVDs I had purchased and they all work perfectly. I now have a spare 2014 DVD and a spare 2005.1 DVD. If anyone is interested shoot me a PM. Looking for $150 on the 2014 and $35 for the 2005.

I now have a 2014 DVD map in there. Considering roads don't change all that much around here it will be another few years before I upgrade again and I always have navigation on the iPhone if I ever need it. I'm thinking about removing the DVD and placing it in the glovebox for whenever I need it because I'm guessing it's constantly working in the background for the compass so no need to work the DVD drive that much. I'm hoping this will extend the life of the DVD drive.

I have 2009 SL550. Called NavTexh (OEM for Mercedes)). Last year of disc is 2017 and price is $99. Needless to say I bought. Haven't received yet but bound to work if OEM
