Low, loud whine from front end.

I have had this issue for quite some time. There is a loud but loud whine from the front end which increases at speed. At first I thought it was the tires but I had them replaced with Continentals and although a bit quieter, the noise is still there. It's loud enough to inhibit conversation in the cabin.

Any ideas?

Could be anything from one of the pulleys to a bad front differential to bad wheel bearings. Need a lot more information, and even so would be really hard to diagnose without driving it and hearing the sound.

If it seems to come from one corner, right or left, could be a wheel bearing.
If it seems to come from directly around the middle, close to the center, a little to the
left, likely it's the front differential if your vehicle is 4 matic 4wd.

If it is 4matic, check around for a shop that specializes in differential repair.
They'll put the car on a lift and listen for where the noise is coming from.
I had my 2006 ML front diff repaired by a local diff shop for $500 + bearings and seals. The carrier bearings are usually the problem, but typically it makes sense to replace the pinion bearings and seals as well as the axle shaft needle bearing
while you're at it, since the labor exceeds the parts costs.

The dealer will offer to replace the entire differential for anywhere from $4,000 - $6,500. They don't sell any of the bearings.
The bearings can be hard to come by, but I stock and sell kits for
rebuilding 2006-2012 R, ML, & GL front differentials, on both ebay on my
website at benzexpert.com. The prices on the website are lower.
I've been a seller on ebay since 1999 and have 100% positive feedback.
Check out my website, and contact me on the contact page on the website if you have any questions. Good Luck and happy holidays!
