3.5 M272 Engine compatibility... options?

Hey guys,

My 06 R350's engine is blown, just shy of 120k miles. Rebuild seems less cost effective as I'd have to get it sleeved and given I don't want to go for high-horsepower... this is/was a commuter car.

I understand most later years of M272 from R350s will work. Does anyone know how new can I go? 2010? 2011? Obviously I want to avoid 06 due to balance shaft.

How about M272s from MLs? Would the 3.5 M272 work from other models like E or possibly C class (if they came in those?)

Just doing some research and appreciate any help.

All m272 are interchangeable all you need to do is swap the oil pan and pick up pipe from your own engine

Yes I bought a r350 with the motor apart in the trunk. I found out the balancer shaft siezed in the crankcase and snapped the timing chain. I bought a used motor from a e350 and swapped the oil pan and pickup tube for the oil pump and dropped the motor straight in

Sweet. Thanks for getting back to me on this poolside!! I'll follow-up with results once I'm ready to swap.

Hey, so I ended up going with a 2011 M272 out of a GLK. It's working. As you mentioned, upper and lower oil pan and a few other things need to be swapped over. Exhaust manifolds and a couple others, but it worked out.

I have the same problem on my 2006 e350 4matic. So a glk350 350 engine should fit? cause I know e350 engines can fit r350. (M272).

My r350 engine died, I can get a GLK 272 2010-2011 and I just found your comment saying it fits.
I know its been some time, but do you remember if that glk had a 272.991 the seller tells me that they dont interchange (r350 has a 272.967)
Im comfortable swapping manifolds, and oil pans and other accessories if it fits.
Hope you see this message.

it should fit. Yes oil pan will be different for sure. I’m running a 2011 glk350 engine in my 2006 e350.

As far as I know all the engines on their Court are the same you sometimes have to replace exhaust manifolds sometimes oil pans oil pumps but they are the same as for the fact that you're replacing a 2006 on a 2010 I would not do it since engines from 06 to 08 have a balance shaft sprocket defect that will cause extreme engine damage if not replaced on time and it's just a matter of time on when it will happen but it will happen.

Again from what I know all m272 engine are interchangeable but you will have to replace certain parts that are specific to your model unless you're getting the engine exactly from the same model of car most cases it will be again like I said exhaust manifolds oil pans oil pumps which is not a big deal if you know how to do it

Would have been a good chance to swap in the M273, but you already had the engine.

Swap!?!?

What would this consist of….I’m planning this in my 211 wagon one day. So trying to gather as much info as possible and parts list as I’m sure it’s gonna be easier to find m273 rwd vs 4matic.
thanks

Haven't done it myself. The one thread I could find on it stated that all they had to do was swap out the V6 ECU for a V8 ECU (virginized of course) and change the programming in STAR. RWD vs 4matic doesn't matter as long as you have an oil pan that fits the 4matic version. Coolant tubing are going to be different lengths, but the accessories should be the same. V8 engine harness needed of course, but you should be able to get that with the engine.

Since the 211 comes in V8 form, the best thing to do would be to purchase a wrecked 211 V8 sedan (ideally rear-ended or side impact) and swap over everything that is different. That would be the easiest way to do it rather than trying to chase down potentially obscure parts. You will need MB Star or know someone that has it. There are gurus on here that can assist with virginizing the ECU so it can be programmed to work with your VIN.

Hey guys,
I have same problem as you. I have 2006 Mercedes ML350 AWD and the engine is done.
I found 2011 GLK350 4matic 272971 31 746011 with 102K miles and want to know if it will work with some swaps from my old broken engine.

Want to know if I can go ahead and buy that engine.

Any 272 3.5L engine should work. You might need to swap the oil pan and oil pickup. If you can find an engine from a W164, it will be a direct swap.
