I just bought a w140 s600 and some things that I picked up is check to see if the engine wiring harness is stock...hope that it's not. Also pay attention to any dash lights like check engine, asr, abs, srs...if any or all are lit you're going to have issues. If you haven't already get a car fax to see how often it's been serviced which is a good indication how well it's been taken care of. That was one of the selling points in getting mine the 2 previous owners serviced the car regularly which shows in it's excellent current condition.

Where to start? The Italians or the Germans?
Wiring harness was fixed in the 96+ cars. Some of the 95's are okay as well. It's not unusual to have an initial $10k repair bill upon initial purchase of the vehicle. Wonderful cars, but equally as expensive to keep running.
