Best year for w126 diesel?
Hi all,
I'm in the market for a w126, long wheelbase. I don't need a fast car, but I do want one that will last a long time. I'm pretty sure that means a 300SDL is the right choice for me, though maybe I should also consider the 300SEL?
I know that Mercedes sometimes makes small--but important--changes in their engines. Is there a particular year that is more (or less) trustworthy than others? I'm open to either 5 or 6 cyl models. As I said, longevity is more important than speed for me.
I don't expect a "good year" to substitute for good maintenance. I just want to know if there are any rules of thumb, along the lines of "beware of 350SDL," etc.

560 Sel
Hi I have 1986 560 SEL with 79k original miles for sale. If you are looking for a reliable and a car that will last you for many many years to come then this is your best bet. Let me know.

SDL is the best bet in the diesel the SD is under powered at 5cyl. Most would recommend w126 gas powered. It is a smoother ride, the problem is finding a w126 that is not over priced, and is in good condition. Good Luck!

Depending on how long you want to keep the car, you can buy a 350SDL with a blown engine and have it properly rebuilt. It should run forever after that, as long as you take good care of it.

It changes all the time
If you really want a long wheel base, the 5 cyl is not an option. Only the 6 cyl came in the long wheel base starting in 86. Whether you go diesel or gas depends on your driving. If you are going to putz around town, get the 300SEL. If you are going to do more long distance or commute driving, get the diesel.
P.S. I noticed you are driving a 328i right now. Once you start driving a Mercedes, you'll probably give that Beamer away.
