How much does it cost to rebuild tranny?

I just saw a w126 (85' 500SEL) for sale here in North California. The seller is asking for $1,000. However, it has really high miles and the tranny need to be rebuilt. Does anyone know typically how much that would cost? Any other major hidden cost for maintaining such a car? Thanks!

to rebuild a Mercedes transmission right I would say $1500 to $2500.To rebuild to run to sell $600 to $1000.

If you can take it out yourself - it's not too heavy or difficult to remove - and bring it to a guy I'd say you're looking around $500; I paid $450 for mine to be rebuilt and the guy was trained in Stutgart; unfortunately the guy is in NJ.

Look under CA repair shops and call around, I was calling shops in this area who didn't specialize in MB work and they were quoting me $1000+ but someone on the MBCA website gave me this guy's # and he did a great job for 1/2 the price.

I'd love to find a deal like that down here in Texas. I have been looking for a long time for my 1985 300SD and I think the cheapest I could find was to order one out of state for around $1400 shipped. In town I am looking upwards of $2500 but that is turn key and me not doing any of the work.
