1991 350SDL rear defrost issues

My wife drives the SDL daily. Recently I noticed the rear defrost switch would not light up when rocked in the up position. I replaced the switch, but noticed the light would not time out and turn off by itself. I recently drove the car and noticed the light will come on when you press the switch in the on or upward position, but will not stay illuminated. It goes out as soon as you let the switch go.

Any ideas as to what might be wrong?

Is there a relay that controls when the switch come on and how long it stays on?
