350SDL engine

You guys have scared the hell out of me with all this 350SDL bad engine talk. I have a 1991 with 65000 miles bought it with 23000 and love it - no problems but am I to believe the engine is going to blow up at some point?

Re: 350SDL Engine

A good number of 350 engines have failed, and Mercedes has been less than helpful about assisting owners with replacement. If your engine starts to use significant quantities of oil, like a quart every 500 miles, then you have a problem. Otherwise, the more you use the car on the highway, and the more miles that are under your belt, the better off you will seem to be. Just change the oil frequently and monitor oil consumption (if any).

If something hasn't already happened, you hopefully will be one of the lucky ones. Great car, so keep driving it.

I'd say that if it doesn't happen by like 70k miles, you're in the clear. For my S350, the failure happened around 59k miles.

Question Understand, understand about the #603 diesel.......

I also have a VERY clean 350. Yes, it has 116K, and runs awesome, but even with service 110% it's using a quart about every 900 miles. Mmmm, just wonder???????????

Mine has 220K and the only thing I would suggest would be at 125K-150K drop the oil pan and check the torque on the bolts that hold the piston spray jets to the oil galley. How do I know this, noticed a drop in oil pressure at idle. The crankshaft wipped 2 spray jets up and nicked a thumb nail piece out of the bottom on 2 piston skirts. This wasn't a load bearing area so I cleaned out the debris, installed 2 new jets and put it back together. She is still running strong with the 2 nicked piston skirts. The car is the wife's daily driver.
