W126 as first car?
I'm looking for something fun and luxurious for my first car, and my budget is around 3 grand. There are several low mileage W126s in my area for much less than that, and i'm considering either buying one of the those, or a lexus ls400.
Which is the better buy? Is the W126 as reliable as everyone says?

That said, for a first car, consider these items.
The MB will get around 12 to 15 MPG.
LS... 17 to 2or so.
MB is a good car, solid, and well respected. For a first car, I would say the LS400 is the way to go. Arguably lower maintenance, less expensive parts and better fuel economy.
If you like the sheer size of the MB, and money is not a concern, then MB all the way.

Since your entire family has this brand, I'd expect THEY voted for the Benz, as do I ... & given the fact that they have theirs, you should be able to benefit from the opinion their mechanics can offer about the vehicles you're considering ...

First, you didn't mention WHICH W126 you were considering. The difference in fuel economy varies drastically from a 560SEL to a 300SDL, and everywhere in between.
Overall, my $.02 is that, if you can find a well-cared-for 126, it is an amazing car to own and drive. It will probably require more maintenance than a Lexus, but it has soul, where a Lexus is a soul-less imp. If you just want something to get you from point A to point B with minimal fuss, and the Lexus is well taken care of, go there. BUT if you really want a car that you will love, look forward to driving, and don't mind a little more maintenance and repair (it is a LOT older, and stuff does wear out), then definitely go for the 126, as there is no comparison in what I consider "Quality of ownership". Vanilla (Lexus), vs. Double-mocha chocolate fudge swirl with a side of jalapeno sauce (Merc)
