1989 500SE - Creaking steering
Hey again everyone.
Another quick and weird issue I'd like some advice on - My car has a very audible (loud) groaning/creaking sounds when I turn the steering wheel to the right. Any takers on what that might be?
Thanks!
Tim

Hello TIm,
My '91 560SEL started what you're describing about three weeks ago. Will be a long while before I find out what it is/was though for a certainty though, as of this past Friday the car would not start (pretty sure a separate issue).
For the record I had checked when it first started making the noise and verified that the power steering fluid level was not low, nor is it presently. My suspicion is that the cause of the noise is a failing power steering fluid pump, as a virtually identical issue occurred with a car my mother had when I was a teenager, and that ended up being the power steering fluid pump. May be a year or more before I know for sure.
Like it's two predecessors, money is an issue for me. I've got to empty out my savings account tomorrow to have the '88 300E (W124), which died on me and has been a driveway ornament since fall of 2014, hauled in to a shop and fixed as it had the least number of issues of my three vehicles when it died, and am hopeful it will be the least costly to have fixed.
As far as my 560SEL is concerned, the power steering pump was the least of my issues with it. Was already having to debate what to do about a single known preventative maintenance repair quote from fifteen months ago. Am rather certain that particular not-quite-an-issue-yet preventative issue wasn't what went out on me Friday though, but then I'm not a mechanic, so what do I know? :/

Tim,
Based on my experience with 2 W126's, you need an idle arm bushing kit. That took care of the same issue in the current and previous W126 I have owned. It is a pretty easy repair and one of the less expensive repairs you will have.
