Did a search... 95 S320 transmission issue. Help!

So I drove the car home from work last nite. Ran fine. Shifted fine.

I need to do an oil change so I fired it up to drive around the block to warm everything up.

I shift into drive and I get a whirring noise from under the car. I get a shuddering that doesn't go away when going slowly. When underway, it'll go, but the noise remains. I slow down for say a stop sign and the shuddering's back.

Coast and I get a metal on metal clanking that I'm suspecting is u-joints.

Reverse is fine. Neutral = reverse. THAT's the thing that's confusing me. If I stick the car in neutral, it rolls backwards like its in reverse. Its like it doesn't want to shift out of reverse even when its in drive.

Thoughts?

191k miles. It was shifting and running fine day before yesterday.

I've been told that there's a plastic bushing in the shift linkage that goes bad. Anyone confirm or deny that?

Hmmmm if I had a lift....

'Course, if I had a lift, the trans would probably be out of the car already! Laying on my back on the asphalt of the driveway? Ugh.
