Some resolve

Well I took my 1996 s420 up to my mechanic the other day and finally got her back yesterday. She was stuck in limp mode and I couldn't figure out why and since I live in a small, when I say small I mean small, town I had about an hour trip to get her somewhere. My European mechanic said that he only pulled two codes one was for a bad MAF Sensor which, I expected needed replacing and was the cause of my rough, speradic idle and for her dying at stop signs every once in awhile. However the bad news is that it came back that the gears selection wasn't synchronizing correctly and the park selection sensor was out told me it would be a rebuild or new transmission. just checking to make sure there's nothing I can do to try and save the transmission before, well she's gotta be replaced. If anyone could let me know that would be awesome.

I don't necessarily know, but I do know what my mechanic told me, and by what he told me it sounds like the transmission is trashed. I asked him if it could have anything at all to do with the MAF or if the MAF was the reason for it going to limp mode he said,"limp mode possibly, having to do with the transmission issues probably not". I've just heard that these cars have some "querks" to them so was just wondering. My MAF sensor is terrible, it is the reason for my speradic idling and revving. I noticed the other day when it was revving while sitting at a stop sign it dropped to about 200 RPM and the ASR light flashed on and off. Is that normal lol.

Change the MAF and see what happens. Don't replace the tranny just yet!!!

So I went ahead and cleaned the MAF sensor instead to give it try it worked for about a weka and now it's starting to idle sporadically again so I'm guessing I should just go ahead and replace the MAF??
