New S600 Owner - question about engine temp

Hey guys - I just picked up my new-to-me 1997 S600. I have a 2007 S600 as well and I am so pleased at how well the '97 drives. I honestly think it cruises better on the highway!

Anyway it's 23 degrees F here and I drove the car for over an hour - the engine temp needle did not break 80 degrees. Is this normal? It just seems super low to me.

Question 2 - assuming the needle/gauge is broken - if the car begins to overheat, will the dummy light come on, or does that just read whatever the needle shows?

Off to look for new rims!

Thanks,
Erik
