Dropping Tranny 722.622 - 1998 S420

Hi all,

Tranny making fairly loud growling noise from the bell housing. Suspect oil pump or the torque converter, etc.

Am through removing All 6 bolts and 2 nuts. Tranny now sitting on top of garage jack, but refuse to come out! Even at an angle! The area that is stuck or not giving is the left stud, where the engine ground cable was attached. Further up is the L5, crankshaft position sensor. Do I have to remove this sensor? What else is holding the bell housing to the crankcase? Did I miss something?

Your kind thoughts appreciated. Tks.

I have got it! Now the tranny sitting on the bench waiting for more work to be done. The two (2) locating dowels situated just below the two studs has rusted and with lots of WD40, let it sit overnight. The following day a little more jiggle and some help of wooden wedge, it broke free! Hooray! Thanks to all.

Now where can I best source all the seals and o'rings and all the 26 friction discs? I do know that Sonnax has the bushing for this tranny, needle roller bearing would be way better! Thanks to all!

I have heard the aluminum in the case can be useless,as failed bearings, will cause it to be destroyed. You might need another case.I would do clutch pak rebuild.I would use yahoo.de,and ebay.de for good parts.

Thanks oldsinners111 for your input. Will head over to yahoo.de or ebay.de for shopping later.

The outer shell of tranny looks solid so far. Gave it a good "scrub down". On opening up the bell housing, the proverbial known bushing inside the K2 drum, supporting the front end of the output shaft, looks and feel bad! Certainly, need a replacement from Sonnax. The friction discs, B1, K1 and K2 all looks destine for the garbage can. Don't know about the rest on the K3, B3 and B2. Searching and could not find the special socket to remove the nut on the output flange.

I heard Mercedes rebuilt tranny will upgrade all the mechanicals and install a newer valve body. But, it requires a "flashed" software to trans. cont. module and also to the eng. cont.module. At times, May need a new eng. cont. module all together!? Ever hear such situations? Care to share your experience?
