Once in awhile, it just won't fire. 96 S600

A few weeks ago I stopped at a store, turned the engine off, did a quick errand, and when I came back the engine turned over fine but would not fire. After about 20 minutes of trying and waiting and trying, it fired and I drove home, no problem. I didn't know the history of the battery so I bought a new one.

Today it did it again. I had been running errands all morning, no prob, parked at a restaurant and as I walked away I decided to re-park the car. Wouldn't start. Decided to eat. Came back, no start, but starter turning over.

Grasping at straws, I looked in the manual and it said something about the car will start only if unlocked from outside. So just for fun I got out, locked the car, unlocked the car, got in, and it fired first time. I assume this was coincidental.

So any thoughts?

Also, I have a voltmeter plugged into the cigarette lighter. When the car is not running it always reads low, like 11.5 volts. When running, it says 13.4. Voltage at the battery, not running, is 13+, fully charged. Any connection between not starting and low voltage? Scanguage on the OBDC shows 13.9 at idle, 14.1 at 1500rpm (I know my old Porsche will turn over at 11.4 but the CDI will not fire.)

Tnx,
Steve

I had the same problem with my W210 E class. Turned out to be the fuel pump starting to fail. What I did was purchase a fuel pressure gauge, and one day when it did this (I had almost the same symptoms you do) I checked the fuel pressure, sure enough it was low. Went ahead and replaced it, never had the issue again.
