My 1 owner California S500. New is NOT better

My first MB was a pristine 94 E320 which I put 150,000 trouble free miles on and missed dearly from the day I sold it. Last year, I picked up a beautiful low mile G55, and it was a great reintroduction to MB. Last week I found a 1 owner 90k miles S500 which was bought and serviced at the same local dealership for 16 years!! I was very lucky to pick this up from the original owner. Everything is in order and works, including the vacuum assist, self leveling suspension, and all electrical components. I consider myself a very lucky man to have found this well preserved beauty. I will keep her going for as long as I can. The highway drive is what impressess me the most. This car is geared and torqued so that it effortlessly pulls away and glides without breaking a sweat. Clearly a vehicle with the autobahn in its sights. I feel honored to drive and own it now, because I know what this car really is, and what went into her to develop it. The Chancellor of Germany drove a 500SE for many years.

Comparably, the new S550 seems lacking. I don't know if we will ever see the old MB again.

I have the 1997 S420 in black and feel exactly the same way about it that you do about yours. These are truly great cars and mine runs as though it is still brand new - everything works just as it should. Mine too was serviced at one dealer, Hoehn in Carlsbad, for most of its life and they did a good job on it.

I couldn't be more pleased for you and hope you enjoy your S500 for many years. They are a thing of beauty, grace, and elegance.

S320 GL350
I recently visited an MB dealer and the salesman told me his manager and some of the mechanics always inquire about the classic old boxy MBs that end up on the lot - after seeing the manager drive by in a mint late-90s C class - so it's a miracle when these end up for sale to the general population. Incidentally the chancellor pic above is of him with an armoured version of the S class. I too agree with your impressions - i have a '95 S320 that I prefer driving over my '06 R class - and it hasn't cracked 70,000 kms yet. Bought from original owner.
