99 s420, need help secondary air pump
Hello Friends,
I recently got the secondary injection code on my w140. I determined that the smog pump isnt working correctly. Does anyone have a good write up on how to change the smog pump, it would really help me a huge amount. Thanks. George

George, this secondary air pump is held by a "V" shaped bracket and secure by 2 long bolts. Just remember that one leg of "V" is bend. Take note of it before removal. The outlet rubber hose can be pull off by hand and the electrical connector - disconnect. The other bolt to remove is the counter balance bracket attached to the engine. The air pump is now free to remove. Now, to facilitate ease of removing the pump out, I remove the cooling fan shroud and the fan, which is secured by four bolts. I mean to move the shroud and the fan to one side. That is done with the removal procedure. Installation is the reverse of removal! ;-))
Have you check out the relay K17 (pink colored) located on position L? Verify that the relay is still good before suspecting the pump! Save you some elbow grease! ;-))
...hope this help you to get started ;-))

Hey Rich,
Thanks for thank info, got everything out and couldn't get the damn pump out, I did remove the fan shroud but not the fan. Do the bolts in fan have to be in any specific order? I opened up my hood and look in the fuse panel on the driver side I don't see a pink k-12 relay? Could it be located where the fuses are in the trunk? I appreciate your help.

Hey,
I have looked for the relay online, I found a pink relay that is compatible with my vehicle just says general relay. Would this relay work to replace the k17 relay?

George, the four (4) bolts securing the fan has no specific order. Personally, I would place a marker for the fan and the hub/coupling so I can put it back in the same position.
As for the relays location in the fuse box (f3), there are 4 small philips screw to be removed on the inside front end of box _After_ the lid (fuse cover) is removed! (...this will allow the "whole" frame of the fuse box to be removed.) Then, pull the lock, situated on top, towards you (front). The top frame cover is ready to be removed thereby exposing the inner half of the fuse box. (...gosh, earlier I wrote a more detailed description of it, but was logged out unwittingly and lost all the writing ;-)) )
There are 3 pink colored relays in there! Back row, 3rd from left, "L" is your Air Injection relay. P/N 001 542 74 19 rated at 12 V 50 amps. Test and verify that is still Good!
IgorE350 rightly mentioned that a pink colored relay is also found in the f4 fuse panel in the trunk. That one is for the fuel pump use.
