The car has been in the shop for 31 days. I am using a mechanic two blocks from my home to do the work. It helps that he too is a friend. Anyway, in the course of dealing with the codes that have collected in the car, he has replaced the shifting box. Upon completion of that repair, a new series of codes were read. He said while examining the old shifting box, he discovered the box contaminated with debris and really gummed up. The cup holder just above the gearshift is the badboy that caused my problem. Possibly yours too. As you can probably guess, what happens to liquids in a cup when you suddenly brake. They spill right into the gearbox. Gums up the contacts. The selector cannot acurately read where its at.

However after installing the new gearbox, several codes came up that were not previously thrown with the origional box. Above the shifter is that awesome cup holder. Really poor design (location). What do you think happens to your drink when you have to brake suddenly? Spills right into the gearshift housing. Over time the delicate contacts get gummed up and before long, the gearbox doesn't even know what gear its in. The box was approx.$400 plus labor. I haven't seen the total bill yet because I am having to deal with other problems with this vehicle. The car has been in the shop now for over a month. I have an extended warrenty but the company (Interstate) pretty much denied the claims from the get go saying my problems were preexisting. A real struggle to get these charming people to pay up. The suspension collapsed two days after I got the car home. Drove it all of 53 miles myself before it went into the shop. Dealer I bought it from, Sonoma, in Vallejo uncoperative. Soooooooooo determined to stick with it.

Before you get into the gearbox, have the electronic shift controller checked. I don't know the cost - mine was changed under warranty.

..Another cause could be the conduit electrical seal on the transmission, which could soak the trans control unit(not sure if it's TCU) in ATF. I would change the transmission fluid too, since the trans could be low on the fluid that should have been changed at 60k mi.
I think it's better to go this route than look into the gear shifter, since gear shifter is more expensive. Hope this could help you..! Last edited by Darknessph; 12-02-2006 at 09:19 PM. |

Your Front right suspension noise is likely the lower ball joint, if not, the control arm bushing that joins the sub frame would be the culprit. Could be both.
Do some search about "transmission fluid" on the forum, and you'll see why you need to change the fluid. Although I haven't done any trans fluid change since mine was new, I'm only at 55k miles right now. I am planning on changing mine very soon. The reason why you could be low on transmission fluid is- that the transmission fluid could leak out through the electrical seal gradually over time. Moreover, the low trans fluid issue could really stand out when you take corners as the fluid fluctuates to one side of the transmission. :-) |

thank you ..i'll check to see if is the control arm and ball joint...so is normal that my 2001 s430 with 90k only drain out 1 and half qt. of transmisson fluid..right cause i never change it before..and the low fluid cost the coded p0700 too then..

you should be able to drain out about 3~3.5qt just by dropping the pan.( have done the work on my previous 98 SL500) you also need to drain the torque converter. When you drop the pan, you also need to replace the pan seal & AT filter. When you drain the torque converter with pan drop, you should be able to get 8~9 qts of ATF. :-)

they only drop the pan and place the seal and the filter, it only came out like 1-2 qt. the most.. is this mean i might have a leak somewhere.. my mechanic don't know how to change the oil on the converter..

BTW to your earlier question. Yes low fluid will cause slow and hard shift. So erratic shifting can also be a symptom. To change the converter ATF you basically have to do 2 to 3 rounds of ATF change. each round should be 500 miles apart or more. ATF circulate in the tranny and torque converter. However MB stealership tech should have a pump that will circulate all the old ATF out then refill with new ones.

That leak is a well-known problem that involved a recall.
