WHAT IS THIS GRINDING NOISE!!!!

I brought my car to Mercedes of Manhattan which has an excellent facility and they said the car wasnt making any sounds when turning.

Its like the damn car acts up when i bring it to the mechanics for them to look at.

My 2003 mercedes s500 4matic for the past 2 years has been making this odd grinding sound toward the back right wheel when i back out of my driveway....and also when i make U-turns or any sharp turns.

It makes a grinding/mechanical sound in which the car vibrates somewhat.

I have posted before but have not had any help from anyone including the dealer?????

Anyone have any knowledge about this or any insight on what could be going on here.

Or has anyone had similar problems in there w220 4matics??

thanks guys

bmurphywa - WOW. That could affect a lot of us. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

The link is to a Technical Service Bulletin for replacement of the Power Transfer Case for MY 205-2006 4-Matic, MODELS E320, E500, E55, E350, E550, E63 AND S430 4MATIC, S500 4MATIC. This is pretty important, especially as some of the affected models near end-of-warranty.

Are there a lot of 2006 E63 4MATICS out there? (I know you're just quoting NHTSA, but something is a bit garbled.)

Yup - a cut & paste from the NHTSA site. I don't know what they mean on that one.

Exclamation

I am having the same problem as yours. One thing that i have noticed is that the noise is there only when the ac is on. If i switch it off and back up and move the steering, i dont get any groan and grinding noise. I have checked the power steering fluid and it seems ok. Did you figure out what exactly it is??
