unusual fan noise at driver's side of firewall 2000 s430

I have been trying to track down an unusual fan noise that originates from the driver's side of the firewall, under the cowling. Sounds like a fan, but is not the blower fan and does not change pitch with increasing cabin fan speed. Noise ceases when the climate control is turned off (Zero selected, lower right tab). I suspect it might be the ambient temperature sensor fan. Sound is audible from behind the instrument cluster, but most noticeable from engine bay. Any suggestions would be helpful. Also considered ecu fan (based on blog searches).
Thanks,

The temperatur sensor fan sits in the dome light assembly. The ECU fan sits just centered at the front of the motor head. ???? Hard to tell?????? By ECU fan, I meant, the secondary air pump
