From what I’ve read there are some readers that will get most of the MB codes in that price range. If you search the forum you’ll find some options. I can’t recommend any because I’m not familiar with them.
However, none will give you everything that Star gives you. If you DIY and plan to own the car (or any used MB) for any length of time then Star is well worth it.

I just bought an Inova 3100rs at AutoZone for $120, same price as Amazon.. It gives me all the info I need for my 05 S500 and 04 BMW 330ci. It has a 'library' function where I guess you can go for more info. They give you app info to link it to a professional service that will read the info and diagnose. Of course they will advise you to go to a shop that is somehow linked up w them. I downloaded, looked around and deleted. I'm 50% diy and 50% to my indy guy.

iCarsoft Mb scanners are pretty good for the price. It reads codes and if I remember correctly it can also do some variant coding. It's a little tiresome to use since it's not touchscreen but it does the job. My autel scanner does a lot more variant coding. I wish I had gotten the more expensive unit after finding out it can do more coding and even change the Vin. That unit is $3000 though. The one I got can program tpms and stuff. I use it to clear engine codes.i use it most toreset my hydraulic truck whenever its acting up. When i first got my s600 my trunk wouldnt open or close. I thought the pump was broken but turns out the computer that controls it was shut down and had to be reset. If you do get one that does coding I recommend taking pictures of all the settings before you mess with it. I accidentally deleted my vin from my eis unit. It doesn't affect operating the car but it does throw a code when I scan it
