Tire Pressure Monitoring Problems

If you have an S or CL with Tire Pressure Monitoring and aftermarket wheels, beware that some wheels are not compatible with the internal pressure sensors. I just looked at a 2001 S600 with 20 inch Lorinser wheels, and a complaint of "Left front tire loses air slowly". The customer stated that every morning his instrument cluster would indicate 40 psi at three tires, and 25 at the left front. In fact, all 4 tires were set at 32 psi when I checked them with my gauge. Apparently the reduced volume of space in a wheel with low profile tires throws off the sensors in each tire, and the antenna receiver can't compensate for it. This isn't true for all aftermarket wheels, as this is the first complaint I've seen like this. Just beware that the system may not work with some wheels.

2003 CL55 AMG
This brings up another question. Any idea why you can not order the "Tire Pressure Monitoring System" on the S55 and the CL55 ? It seems that you can get this option with the S500/600 and CL500/600 in addition to the Sport option. Obviously the sport option uses the same wheels, so that can't be the problem......

That's a good question. You're right, the tires and wheels in the Sport package are exactly the same as the 55 AMG tires and wheels. For reasons unknown to me, the Tire Pressure Monitoring is not available on the AMG models.

I'm curious how M-B is able to sell cars in the US sans tpms as this feature became mandatory on vehicles sold after Nov. 2012.

Am I missing something?

It actually was mandatory sooner than that, and were in fact available in the AMG models.

Clarification in order.

Tpms mandatory in the EU after Nov. 2012. In the US mandatory after Sept. 2007.
