Battery Charge warning light?

Can anyone tell me why why this light would come on, is it a dead battery? Car starts up fine, all lights seem bright, everything is working fine. I was driving the car and the light just came on. Any help would be great. Thanks

First thing I would check is the battery voltage with the car off. It may be low causing the notification to light up. If i'm not mistaken, the battery should be no less than 12V, which is close to the minimum to actually start the vehicle. If the battery checks out OK, then your problem may be with the alternator or elsewhere.

What year and model is your car and what does the light's icon look like? I'm not familiar with a Battery Charge warning light.

Charging system problems are indicated with text messages on the cluster display.

Had the same problem the week of New Year's (after having the car for an entire two weeks). Replaced the battery ($135.00) and everything worked fine.

If your battery tester is indicating that you have at least twelve volts, you may have simply had some moisture build out which is causing an electronic "short" of sorts. If you're in a cold climate, and something got wet and froze, throw the car in the garage to thaw out and see if that little red message box doesn't go away on its own.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies guys. Unfortunately the dealer told me that the voltage regulator was fine and that my alternator is shot. Alternator alone is $1022 plus 8 hours of labor. Total cost is over $2000. Can't win with this car. It is a 2001 s600 v12. The warning light was red in the cluster display. I guess I have to take this one on the chin as usual .

Is the dealership service department your only option? Any type of independent service shop near you that might be willing to work with you on the price?

Hmm... $1022 sounds like a deal.

Checking out a 2001 S600 this is what I see:

A1371500950 ALTERNATOR $1970.00 $1580.00 $1,580.00

And Parts.com has them listed for about $1265...
