A/C Problem - Climate Control Unit

My AC stop working ('02 S55) in September and the sympton was the red LED indicating the AC was off was always illuminated.

My mechanic replaced the climate control electronics in the dash. Part #220 830 11 85

Now the LED is lit again and I am thinking it has failed the same way (it is a liitle cool here in NJ so I don't need the AC just yet ...

I have searched the forum but I don't see any other references to this problem.

It is an expensive part to fail every 5 months!

Any insights?

All MB repairs are warranted for 1 year. The dealer should interpret the climate control diagnostics and confirm the failure. The system shuts down (which is what the LED is telling you) whenever internal pressures aren't right. It's often a valve or pressure sensor, but can be a leak or any of a number of other problems. The odds are that it's not the electronics again.

A/C Problem - Climate Control Unit

Thanks Whoever ... I should have know that

I see people in my business jump to stupid conclusions all of the time!

Also, I didn't realize there was a 1 Year waranty, so now I am hoping it is the same problem abd it was just a defective replacement and not a chronic electrical problem or something new.

Funny how things change.

Anyway, you are probably right and it is unrelated.

Thanks

Run climate control diagnostics to check for codes. If there are no codes, run through the different parameters and check for any that don't make sense.

The 210 forum, sticky section at benzworld.org has good info on how to access this info. I know how to get to parameters (both temps at 72, hold rest button, then use temp buttons to scroll through), but I can't for the life of me remember how to get to the codes.

Thanks OliverK

I pulled the values as you suggested

0 - 9,1 C
1 - 11,7 C
2 - 0,0 C (it was 32 F outside)
3 - 29.5 C
4 - 13.0 C
5 - 3,8 C
6 - 36 C
7 - 2,0 bar
8 - 2,0 C

Sensor 7 is at 2,0 bar ... I would guess this is refigerant pressure and this would be the one I would care most about?

I looked over at the other forum and after some experimenting came up with this to get the codes ...

Left temp at HI, right temp at LO
hold the rest button and activated Charcoal filter button for 5 seconds

I got a message that looked like

Searching ... then after 5 more seconds

DIAG KLA V
ERROR 1298

From what I recall, it appears that you are low on refrigerant.

I'd have a chat with your mechanic and look for a leak. It seems that all auto a/c systems leak a little, so unless its major, I would try just adding refrigerant for now.

I think 1298 is rear temp evap sensor. Please note you evap temp sensor front is reading low which could mean it is peforming ok, also your heater temperature for one side is 13C which is ok. The pressure is low, however these systems can vary pressure to suit. Your outside temperature is very cold so it is difficult to test under these conditions. I am concerned that the climate control light is lit again after a short time. The climate control unit may not have been the problem. If there is a leak I would check behind the left (driver) wheel arch if you have rear evap unit as there is a solenoid there which had aleak on my S500. If you have heard hissing sound from center vents in the summer then gas is low. Error codes can give the wrong impression with a system so becareful with diagnosing using these values.

Guys, while we can access the codes, is there a way to reset the climate unit DIY? (On an early '99 430)

I ask as i have been having problems with my fan motor recently, and while playing with it disconnected it from the regulator which caused the EC light to come on perminently. It was due a service anyway, so while in they simply reset this for free and its been great since.

However, like a total fool i have just done the same thing this evening Wondering if i can save myself a trip to the dealer?

2002 s500 AC problem

Thank you for the info posted on this site - I was able to fix an Air Conditioning problem by reading the conversations related to someone else's issue - my "AC off" button (red light) would not turn off and the compressor would not engage so there was no cold air. By setting the left temp to "HI" and the right setting to "LO" and then hold down "REST" and the "Charcoal Filter" button down at the same time for approx 5 seconds, I was able to see 3 error codes (toggle the error code by using the right temp setting button). Once I pushed the two round "Auto" buttons (this button also changes the air flow positions) - by doing that it reset the codes and my AC started to operate normally - I think the problem started when a radiator hose popped and an auto shop replaced it. This was in the winter so I didn't notice the light on for 3 weeks and I think they may have unplugged something and created a problem. Now one of two things will happen, this will continue to work and life goes on or the light will come on again and I will now know the problem is its not with the controller (that MB dealer told it was - $1000 repair). Now I will be able to research the error code my self and be an educated consumer.
Does anyone know where I could find the error code list?
1458 = Right Foot Well Flap Actuator
1464 = Right Center Flap Actuator
1256 = Evaporator Temp Sensor Front

W220 AC / Heating control error codes and how to reset

I used these for my 2004 S430 4MATIC sedan. Good reference. Hope this helps!

W220 S430 AC / Heating control error codes and how to reset

1) Set the car in park and turn on the engine, hold the rest and particle filter buttons down together for about 5 seconds (The screen will show searching)
2) This screen gives you the fault codes. If you're curious, scroll up and down to see them using the temp up and down switch.
3) Pop out the left auto vent button and right auto vent button.
4) Now press the the left button in, and then the right one. The system will reset.
5) Turn the car off, wait a minute, then turn it back on again. If you don't have any further problems, the light should stay off. (If it comes back on again, you have more things to do)

Some of the possible error codes:
