"Battery Charge Visit Workshop" Insight Needed

Hey guys,

My girlfriend's mom's 2006 S350 had this warning message appear on her dash on the way home in red. I looked at the voltage via the cluster, and the car had 12.2V before being started and then held a constant 12.0V with the vehicle running.

Is this indicative of a faulty battery? Could it be the alternator? Car has 66,000 miles on the original battery.

To me, the 12.0 volts running voltage suggests a charging problem. My cars are typically ~14 volts running. However, the battery might be drawing it down since you indicate the battery voltage is slightly *lower* with the engine running. Nevertheless, try having the battery checked first, since it's the easiest to deal with. Since it's ~6 years old, it's worth considering replacement; investigation, at least.
Cheers,
Jeff

most auto parts stores can test both your battery and alternator on the car for free

Thanks guys. Having my buddy check it out tomorrow to see if the alternator is performing as it should. I could not find a recall for MY06 voltage regulators. Thanks.
