V12tt cel, engine misfire

After the past six months with this symptom, the MB dealer now has replaced both the left and right coil packs as well as 48 brand new platinum plugs...big bucks.
Yday, the ck engine light came on again - misfire on many cylinders at start.
The shop foreman now says alternator ok but starter battery is 9 yrs old and could be the cause do the cel at start up.
Unfortunately I have no way to prove, but I'm starting to be suspicious of ALL of these prior diagnosis, especially if the $385 starter battery solves the problem. In other words, why didn't they isolate this $385 part to begin with, rather than $5 to $7k worth of extensive repairs?

Did you pay for the repairs or did a warranty pay for it?
