2002 S430 Trunk opens only half way and shuts

I recently purchased 2002 S430 with very low miles on it and having problem with the trunk opening only half way and closing it by itself after 2 minutes or so and sometimes I can't close it by pressing the red button on the trunk lid. I don't know whether the trunk hydrolics struts are bad and need to be replaced or not. Can someone help me please?

As for as the opening half way you can check the trunk limiter in the vehicle settings that show up in the little screen under the speedometer. These settings are controlled from the steering wheel. Make sure the limiter is set to off.

Assuming you can resolve that problem and can get the trunk to go up all the way and it doesn't stay in that position then you could possibly have a trunk
strut problem.

do you have a hydraulic lifting trunk, if so you need to check the fluid in pump located next to battery right side rear the unit can be serviced with adding fluid

I'm not sure. How can i check? I think it's the struts getting worn out or something?

Thanks for the post. I still can't find the settings for limiter in speedometer screen.

Hold the button down on the driver's door that opens the trunk for about 10 seconds. (Don't open the trunk with that button just hold it down for now. Now open the trunk and see if that resets to the manufacturer's setting and open it all the way.

Open trunk and check your hydraulic pump it's next battery on the right side lift the foam top of and lift out pump. It has a see tegu plastic cover that can be removed for filling purposes. Check and make sure you use correct zf fluid. Do not use transmission fluid. You can unscrew all the hydraulic lines and then put it on bench. Pour fluid directly onto pump let it drain into small orfices Untill full. Then fill plastic cup all the way and quickly flip pump over setting it on the filler cup. Some fluid will spill but that's okay. Reinstall pump and you should have good working trunk. Good luck.

Thank you so much John. My problem is resolved with your suggestion. I turned on the engine and held down the trunk open button on the door for 10 seconds and the trunk opens all the way up now.

trunk hydraulics

if you search my threads here and on Benzworld, you will find the instructions on how to check and refill the reservoir. You do not need to disconnect any hoses, you can do it right in the trunk.
Observe my safety warning!
I have photos for all steps with my posting.

Good luck!

When you say "small orifices", are these the holes from the two hydraulic lines that should be filled?
