Question COMAND NTG1 CD/DVD playback issues

Hi,

I've got a 2005 Euro Spec S320 CDI. Since I've had the car I've pretty much been unable to make the COMAND NTG1 DVD-Drive which sits behind the screen read ANY MP3 CD/DVDs or what really worries me - regular audio CDs as well. Following the instructions in the COMAND manual I burn the tracks as DATA CD/DVD in ISO9669/Joliet format as opposed to MP3-CD for example. All I get in each case is an error message saying "Unknown format" after spinning the disc for around 15 to 20 seconds. Oddly, the CD Changer at the back has no problems whatsoever playing the audio CDs (.cda) that I've created.
And yes, if the error message stated something like "Disc error" or alternatively even "No CD" I'd be more inclined to think that either the 2 lasers are indeed on their way out or the lenses are extremely dirty. However, that rarely is the case in real life. Most of the time only one of the lasers goes bad, but the other one keeps working flawlessly. This error message leads me to believe that the COMAND headunit is able to read the data, but for some reason cannot decode it.
So my question is, am I up for a COMAND firmware update here or do I need a DVD drive replacement after all? Or could it be that this functionality has been disabled using Star Diagnostics (which would actually make no sense)? Please note that my seatbelt/parking brake audible warning has been disabled via the MB Star Diagnostic tool, as I suspect the last owner might have found it rather annoying. Thank you.

Regards,
Dean

Case closed.

Should your NTG1 start behaving in a similar way - old optical drive goes out, new OEM Harman-Becker one goes in. Job done. Cost - around 150$. Same thing goes for the NAVI drive in the trunk if it starts acting up out of the blue (eg. No DVD, wrong DVD version etc.). These things have a life expectancy of about 5000 hours, so they all fail eventually.
