code reader
hello-
I have a 2002 s500 and was wondering if anyone can tell me which code reader is best for my make and year car. I had my check engine light come on last week for about an hour and has since not come back on.
thanks for your help!

well, since they come in all levels of sophistication....$15-700, what are you
expecting to do with it? just read? $20-50. reset? which sensors do you
want the device to interrogate?
not really wanting to spend any money (or use rarely)? take to Autozone for
free use of their ODBII reader.

thanks raymond- since i plan on keeping the car for another year i'de like to purchase a code reader and spend around $100 for it i dont want to just reset the problem but would like the codes so that I can take it to a mechanic and know in advance what the problem is.

Get a Bluetooth ELM327 OBD-II adapter and the Android App Torque. If you dont have an Android then get the Actron Pocketscan from Autozone.

MB Specific reader
But my objective is to (if even possible) to modify certain attributes within the system such as increasing the turn signal blink from three to four, turn off the auto DRL, activate other features that might otherwise be unavailable etc...
Any input you have would be appreciated.

To turn off auto DRL you go in settings and put headlights from CONSTANT to MANUAL. DRL's will be turned off. That reader you're talking about is Star Diagnostic, Mercede's own software that communicates with the car. You can even raise or lower the Airmatic or ABC. But the only problem is its not cheap, and if you are looking for one, try not to get the cheap multiplexers as they break in weeks. (reported by many people)

Agree with Tusabes, as soon as you get within 2 miles of the dealer your wallet will start jumping around in your pocket.

i don't have much of a choice since I don have a decent indie shop and the one that is close would not be able to read the error codes
