Is correct oil spec for 2001 S600 W220 0W40 Mobil 1, please?
Is 0W40 really correct? I have paid to have the oil changed up until now but I want to start doing it myself since they pump it out from the top anyway and since the oil filter is on top of the engine. Best regards, Bo

Bo I have been using Mobil 1 0W40 for years on my Mercedes. It will take about 8.5 quarts. However, I always put in 8 quarts, run it a couple of days and check again and replenish if necessary. You can buy the Mobil 1 0W40 at Walmart for less than $25 for the five quart container.
I also use the vacuum process since I have seen the dealers do it.

Interesting fact:
My factory owned dealership does not use or sell Mobil 0W-40 anymore, only 5W-40 (as per their MB approval specs, which I reviewed with them to be sure).

According to the factory approved service products the following oils are approved in MB Sheet 229.1/229.3 for the S Class gasoline engine:
1- Mobil 1 SuperSyn European Car Formula.......OW-40
2- Castrol Syntec...........5W-40
3- Quaker State Full Synthetic European Formula......5W-40
4- Pennzoil Synthetic European Formula.....5W-40
5- 76 Pure Synthetic Motor Oil.....5W-40
It is up to you but I would just buy the Mobil 1 0W-40 European formula which meets the MB specs. Buy the European Formula.

Keep in mind, you have a S600 which requires more oil. 9.5 Quarts i believe. I too have been using 0w-40 Mobil 1 for my S class. It works great!. For the M137 engine i dont think theres an oil dipstick, and you shouldn't trust the electronic measurement either. Siphon the old oil out from the filter port and put in the exact amount plus a little bit more, as the engine will burn the oil. But its best go buy an oil dipstick from Mercedes.

You are better off underfilling by 1 qt, the MFD will tell you when when more is needed.
Do not overfill!
