2001 s500 17335 miles -10 MPG?? HELP

Just bought a 01 S500 with 16551 miles from original owner few weeks ago and on the dash the display tells me I am getting under 10MPG?? How accurate is this readout?

I'm assuming these dash readings are not accurate, since my 2003 S600 always tells me I'm getting around 3-5 MPG when it should be getting 13-19 MPG. 3 miles per gallon is a nightmare..... but I don't think the display is accurate since I'm not at the gas station every 24 minutes. I don't think you should worry.

The way it calculates MPG is by the speed sensor and fuel flow rate. If one of the sensor is bad, ESP Malfunction, then you won't get a correct reading.

Thanks for the help Jason. When I go through the options in the settings it says 0 malfunctions. How can I find out which sensor is bad? Is it a expensive fix? Can I fix it myself or do I need to bring it to a mechanic?

You can go to your local autozone and get your car scanned. See if its giving an unusually higj fuel flow rate. Or the speed sensor is off, compare it with gps speed. But you can get 10 mpg with that 5L v8, what is your driving style?

Okay well then you prob have a broken sensor somewhere. Is the car running weird? Check engine light on? On my 2003 S430 i get 32 highway and 16-28 local. I drive in Sport Mode, it saves gas.

Mercedes
Very simple test : fill your tank till the gas pump clicks then drive 100 miles. Fill the tank again till the pump clicks . Calculate your mpg based on how many gallons it took to fill up.

The car drives better then any other car I have ever owned and I have owned over thirty cars including Grand Marquis, c5 corvettes, turbo rx7, starions conquests, camaro's, crown vics, infinitys, hondas, etc.. So no car drives fine. No check engine light and no registered malfunctions.
