If the check engine light is on, you should get to the closest autozone for a free check up. See what codes are stored in there.

Does it crank? See if it restarts once it cools down
A car that won't restart when hot but starts normally when cool is classic symptom of a bad crank position sensor . Very common problem . About $200-300 for a shop to change out
If it doesn't even crank , it's not the cps
In that case, a weak battery or poor connection is more likely

MBWorld Fanatic!
Changing the CPS yourself is less than $50, takes fifteen minutes, can be done beside the road. Takes a 10mm 1/4"-drive socket, long extension and ratchet.

There was no cranking... lights and radio all worked. The message was " Malfunction ESP, Visit Workshop"....
Had it towed to the dealer.. will have a diagnosis in the AM and update the outcome..

The dealer will rip you off. A LOT. I had one part that costs 120$ replaced for a grand total of 1000$. I couldn't do it myself as it needed STAR.

Wow, big hit- sorry to hear that.
Did a quick search on Ebay for the part- this came up but appear first three digits are different:

DISCONNECT THE MAIN BATTERY BEFORE DOING THIS... Before you jump to ECU fried. Take at look at one more thing, under the passenger footwell there is carpet, pull that back and you will see foam, pull that off and take the metal plate off. There is three nuts holding it on. Under the plate you will see a black box. Unscrew everything and pull it out, take it apart gently with a flathead screwdriver. See if any of the fuse links are blown. Same thing happened to mines and replaced it. Car works now but I did need a STAR reprogram.
