The only way to check the transmission fluid level is to buy the dipstick tool. In the USA, eBay is the easiest and cheapest source. Correct fluid level in the transmission is very important.
Different brands and types of fluid are sold in different parts of the world. Mercedes has lists of specified fluids.
You will find a lot of information here:

It is easier to get the correct help if you tell us where you are...

Use MB 236.14 which is commonly known as ATF 134 or ATF 4134.
MB 236.12 or 236.10 will also work, but the latest types are recommended.
Getting the level right is important, and exacting.
The level is measured with the car on level ground with the engine running and the transmission in neutral. You break off the locking tab to remove the dipstick tube cap, then fit a new one.
Ideally the transmission should be at operating temperature - 80 deg. C. This is only achieved after driving fast for 10 to 20 miles.
The fluid level varies considerably according to oil temp (about 0.8mm per deg. C), and there's a second mark on the dipstick for ambient temp level measurement (20 deg. C).
The dipstick tool is long, and has to wind round lots of bends to reach the tranny sump. When it hits the bottom, it will still have several inches sticking out the top.
Keep the dipstick spotlessly clean at all times.
