My 1st guess would be the VSS if all wires checked out ok. N2/N3?
Glad you replied DrDoe. Seems like I'm following in your exact footsteps here brother.. Today I took out the conductor plate and cleaned it up real nice along with the valve body. Checked the speed sensors (both) for any debris or broken contacts. Believe it or not, everything looks fantastic on it. Since this is such a generic code, could it be the N47-5 module? It seems that's where the short is. The guy at the transmission shop told me this a week ago, when he drove the car and said it seems like the ABS /BAS module. I took that out of the SAM 1 and took it apart. But there was no bag resistors or contacts on the circuit board...looked fantastic though looks can be deceiving...

This new scanner I got, wouldn't it tell me if it was the speed sensors on the conductor plate? I'm not getting those errors. The OBD II Section just shows the same code p0720 and P0500... but the DTC portion of the scanner shows much more details

NEW INFO: Okay, have tried everything to NO avail... BUT I tried something different today that has "temporarily" fixed my 2001 S-430. My issue was that when I started the car and drove, the ESP, ABS, BAS and Airmatic warnings would come on and the speedometer would go to ZERO. It would go into limp mode. Reading with a cheap OBDII scanner found two problems P0720 and P0500... With my new MBII scanner, it gave me more pinpointed errors, such as speed sensors (all 4) were not communicating with the can bus (see codes in prior post).

Well, out of the blue, I decided to turn off the ESP button and no more errors as described above. Tell me if I'm wrong here, but the N47-5 Module controls all those lights and then some. It also would cause the "cruise control" not to work at all. SoI'm thinking a new module (used one)? What do you peeps think? Love to hear from ya DrDoe....

Curious are you clearing the codes with the engine running?? because you shouldn't. ESP ABS and BAS go away once you turn the wheel all the way to the right then all the way to the left then all the way back to the right.

Sorry it didn't work for you....

No, I'm clearing codes with icarsoft MBII reader/scan tool. This is an awesome must tool to have...Got another N47-5 Module today. Exact same number as original, but after I installed it, couldn't even turn the key on and all errors came up immediately. At least with the old module, car would at least go a 1/4 mile before it went out. With the ESP button on (turns off ESP features) it runs great, need to get a new good module...The one I got off E-bay was $25.00, no wonder it is crap! Order new one tomorrow

Thanks for hanging in their with me peeps!

PROBLEM SOLVED, Yes, I have good news for all you W220 owners who will come across this in the future. Don't you just hate reading through a thread on the EXACT same problem you are having and you get so excited, only to be left hanging by the person who started the thread NEVER says (finishes) or publishes the FIX?

And don't you HATE show offs? lol... Oh crap, that's me, so I'll get to the point... Well AFTER all I've been through, and if you read this whole thread you'd know, I've done and been through everything with this issue. Well, as it turns out, SUSPENSE BUILD UP, DRUM ROLL..... It's the tires being wrong size in the front! Caused all this BS and drove me crazy... Check this link, especially under W220 S-series I have 19" rims but the tires in the front were NOT compatible... http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/inf.../mercedes-benz

I hope NOBODY goes through what I went through. There was a person who brought this to my attention named Adrian from Moreno Valley CA who buys and parts out MB's on Craigslist. He was going to sell me a ESP/BAS/ABS/PML module and let me try it BEFORE I bought it. Put it in, car did the same thing! So he suggested that the tires were not proper. This guy was a wealth of information, very valuable info... Anyway, he told me my front tires were 235/35.19, rears were in the compatible range (see chart in the link I provided) at 275/35/19... As you can see in the chart, in order for the ESP to work correctly without causing P0500 and P0720 I needed 245/40/19

So there ya have it, Even though the tires on my 2006 E350 were not on the spec sheet, I used them just to see if the problem would repeat itself. IT DIDN'T so all 4 tires were the same size, the ONLY thing that wouldn't work was the Cruise control... So my wife is officially off the jinx list.... PEACE OUT...(mic drop)

Don't I know it. We are ALL lucky I ran into this guy... I've searched high and low, in every Mercedes Benz I could get my hands on, and not a one of them had the answer to this problem. Not a one. Can you believe all the crap I went through and this was the issue all along? I am so glad I could contribute something I learned to help others in this forum. Rock on Dr Doe and thank you for hanging in there with me. Kudos to you brother
