05 s600 whining during cruise/after acceleration...

It sounds like a power steering whine (I'm assuming ABC system related).

But it's relatively quiet if I'm casually driving, but once I give a hard acceleration (not during acceleration), it starts whining loudly.

It also goes away when I turn left, but whines while going straight or right, and when doing hard turns (parking lot, etc).

Pump? Could it be anything else?

Finally got to drive this thing, and it's flawless except for this annoying whining.

Thanks!
Em

Can you hear it when idling in neutral?

Can you stick your head under the hood and get someone to reproduce it by turning the wheel?

Does it happen at all rpm?

Does seem to come from a particular place - engine? Transmission?

I had a similar issue with my 03 S600. I replaced all of the pressure accumulators and transmission mount. Flushed the reservoirs and changed the ABC/steering filters. Nothin'

Then I bit the bullet and bought an extended warranty so they could foot the bill for my motor mounts (23 hour labor intensive job for that model year. Cost the same as the 12 month warranty itself) cleared the whine right up. Then a few days later my power steering pump "mysteriously" went out. Replaced that under warranty too

What warranty company and is it still available ?

Most aftermarket warranties Won't cover motor mounts or the abc pump

It was called Zurich. I purchased it from Fletcher Jones in Newport Beach, CA over the phone even though I did not buy the car there but the salesman didn't care and said I did on the paperwork.

They don't offer that exact company any longer, switched to something else. But, you can google the name and find a dealer that still deals with them.

We do our own work, so, a warranty doesn't do us much good, and I don't think I could get one anymore anyway.

I think we are going to swap a new pump in and see how that goes.

If it doesn't fix it, I'll look into mounts. Thanks

Just a thought - perhaps the acceleration is moving something just enough for a hose to rest against the body. That can transmit noise at increased levels.

I'm also getting some weird noises at low speed/parking lot maneuvers. Unsure if it's related, but I'm assuming it is.

I'm going to have my husband check the motor mounts next time he's in there. And see if there's anything else that looks like it could be the culprit.

Or maybe the engine is twisting against something.
