Wallyp,
Thanks for your reply. The dash button will not lock or unlock the doors. The door closing aids (suction) are not working either.
Best,
Fredomb

Ok.
If you have a vacuum leak somewhere, you'll hear the pump working overtime for a few seconds then shut off to protect itself. Check these:
Does locking the car lock the fuel filler flap?
Can you lower the rear head restraints?
Can you open the trunk?
Does your trunk handle extend?
I think on the 220 chassis the lines go directly from the pump to the receiving end. I'm attaching a diagram of the lines and the designations you can find on the pump.
The PSE pump is located around the rear driver-side fender, behind the trunk liner. The vacuum lines just snap on. Check if they fit well. Find the label corresponding to the problematic feature on the pump and remove the vacuum line. Have a friend operate the function and watch for blowing/suction. While doing this, plug the air tube with your finger to create resistance so the pump thinks the job and is done and it's ok to stop.
That'd rule out the pump as a possible culprit.
Let us know what comes up.

Glad to help. Extremely not glad you pump is shot... I don't think these units are that prone to breaking, maybe you can get a used one?
What exactly is wrong with yours? You said you can hear it spin.

MBWorld Fanatic!
If you are into DIY (and I really hope that most W220 owners are) there is info on the forum about disassembling and cleaning the pump. The small passages can clog.

I am sorry to hear about your pump, I was just quoted $549.50 under my wholesale account here in SoCal (30% off retail and no tax) so the list price would be outrageous. I am having a similar problem with my trunk. No leaks in the latch anymore, but I hear no air whoosh when I try to open the trunk or close it, but everything else is working that is supposed to.
Now, I would highly recommend taking the carpet liner out of your trunk and simply cleaning the pump. Blowing some compressed air in there backwards and forwards, it could be clogged up. Plus, unplugging it directly could help fully reset it.
Worse case scenario is that you have a still malfunctioning pump, but you got to learn a lot about it by playing with it hands-on. Best case scenario is that you saved yourself a butload of money if it begins functioning properly again.
Good luck, let me know if you need any help, and what your outcome is whichever direction you choose to take.

Thank you Zach for the input. I resorted to a small repair shop. Now I have a new problem, about a month ago A small jiggling noise started from what sounds like the left front side. I am told the first place to try is lower control arms. I put a large screwdriver in there and there seems to be play. The prices are astronomical. Does anyone know if any of the aftermarket control arms are of acceptable quality. They seem to be drastically less than MB prices.
Thank you,
Fred

These suspensions are really really tight. Even if there's a failed part, you may not be able to pinpoint it correctly if you don't know what you're doing. From my experience you'll only notice if it's completely shot.
Here, watch this video:
I also suggest going with Lemfoerder and avoiding cheap parts. What you save now you lose in a year when you pay the labor to replace the cheap part again.

You are able to get just the bushings from the dealer. Any shop can press bushings in and out of your old arms. Mercedes also sells the ball joints separate too. Approximately $60 for bushings and $40 for ball joints. Each dealer prices their parts differently even though they all come from the same place.
When people speak of prices on these cars, it's a good time to remind them that while the cars may have depreciated and become affordable to the masses, maintenance parts don't depreciate. You're still paying for parts on a $100,000 car.

2002, S430 Doors and Trunk locks stopped working
The Doors and Trunk locks stopped working. One morning tried opening the trunk and it didn't open, then noticed that all the door locks are not working. The central lock button on the dash and the trunk switch on the door don't lock or unlock and there is this strange smell in the car. If I try to lock and unlock with the Key remote, the locks don't work, but the car thinks the doors are locked because the LED on the central lock button starts blinking and if I pull the door open the alarm goes off.
