Socket for lug bolts on S550 wheels
#28
I re-tested the fitment of the 17mm and 11/16 sockets on the brand new lugs and both fit fine (there is minor play with the 11/16). It appears that if the lugs aren't damaged or worn out, the regular sockets will work, but are more likely to distort and strip the lugs over time. I'll try the NSB.17 when it arrives.

I ordered brand new lugs from Amazon and they arrived today. For anybody who needs new lugs they can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ls_o00_s00_i00. These are the OEM lugs, they arrived in bags with the Mercedes part number 000-990-54-07.
Some owners keep this 24" breaker bar with convex socket in their trunk for emergencies........

I got the socket and I'm very happy with it. I've even showed it to some techs and head of parts at my local MB dealer and they have some interest.
BTW, I was surprised that it's actually more loose on my bolt than a 17mm socket. There's more wiggle room. But I like how it grabs on the center rather than the edges lessening the opportunity for technician error.
If this is made for the Maybach tool set, why isn't there a Mercedes-Benz part number?

I also had great results with my NSB.17 socket as well. I had all of my lug bolts replaced with new ones and there is no signs of stripping or damage. Highly recommended.
Ultgar, is the free shipping code one per account? I was thinking about ordering another one for backup.

Don't buy bolts, fix them.
If you look at the bolt closely, the head has the stainless wrapper on bolt and it is soft. The problem is that the wrapper out of shape after uses. You will find new ones soon to be out of shape again.
There is an easy way to re-shape the head which I did. Here is how:
Find a few short wood blocks and a rubber hammer, or wood block instead of. Insert bolt all the way in to socket.
Then put the bolt and wrench all together, one end on a wood block to keep some angle. Using a rubber hammer or a woodblock, hammering heavily sidewise between bolt and wrench. Rotating the bolt and keeping hammering. After a few rounds, the head of bolt will be in perfect shape again.
Hope this can save you a few $$.

Not sure it was made for the new lug bolts as the socket has been around since the mid-90's. I used to sell it to BMW owners as a safer alternative to the standard 17mm hex since the convex socket grabbed the bolts on the flats rather than the corners. Then in Nov 2007, I was contacted by Mercedes of Manhattan (NY) looking for a Facom socket (the NSB.17) that came in their Maybach tool set. Its only recently that car owners have been buying these for themselves. SD

I did not take pic after. Anyway, bolt looks the same as before but much better fitment with socket. The feel is the same as new one. Also, you don't need to use much force to punch. The wrapper is pretty soft.

Anyone find a replacement bolt for the "flower-head" lug bolts that came on these cars? I have too many lugs that are stripped or rounded and would just like to replace them all with a more standard bolt....
Also, They appear to be a two part "bolt with a cap on top"...anyone remove the cap and see what is underneath? Maybe its that simple?

I had one bolt stripped by the local dealer. They had not heard of the special tool to remove them, and viola, stripped it flat. Technician said it is simply a 6 sided 17mm socket. Just ordered the special socket to have and will share this with dealership. They showed me the invoice for a new lug...$5.45/bolt.

This is not the right tool. It will not protect bolt heads better than a regular hexagon socket. The right tool, you can see here:
