does anyone have any idea if the rear entertainment package in the new s classes w221 is available in north american market or is it only available in specific models like the s63 s65 or s600 please can someone shed some light on this particular option any help will be appreciated.

MB erred badly here. It is just stupid to not include a rear seat DVD option on $100,000 plus cars these days - especially on cars that are focussed on the luxury market and are well suited to rear passengers. Rear seat DVD players are available on other brands costing 1/3 the price.

Sure there are less well integrated third party solutions but that does not excuse this ridiculous absence from the US market.

I believe everyone in this market segment has a rear seat entertainment system except MB. Makes no sense they do not offer it in the US unless this is deliberate de-contenting...

...even so all they have to do is come up with a price that makes sense for them - people will include/buy it.

From what I understand from my dealer, with facelift in MY10, the 221 will get an option for a rear seat entertainment system. The system which is currently available in Europe is apparently not that great (single source, wired head-sets) and very expensive (4000 euros) so no wonder it is not offered stateside. You'd be better off going aftermarket - cheaper and better. The MY10 system, is supposed to be similar to the one which is now offered in the MB SUVs but with the screen integrated into the headrest - dual source and wireless headsets. I would expect pricing in the 2-2.5k range.

I know from my purchasing experience of my 07 221, many of the dealerships have after market options (package deals) available for any vehicle, that can be installed prior to picking up the vehicle. The downside of this, you will definitely be over charge for whatever you get from them.

I totally agree, the more i use it the more I dislike and feel robbed - paid close to 110K for the 09 - got it in December and believe me - its got only 770 miles - eventually will trade in for a Bentley continental spur - sorry - but this has been the most disappointing S class for me - I agree the ride and all is good - but these silly little things - can't use any radar detector (since MB chose to use K band interfering radars for distronic - ipod integration sucks ! - the use of PCMCIA card for mp3s and now - the big safety problem with the rear door locking (rear passengers get stuck inside !!) - ridiculous waste or money

I'd have to agree. Not having a rear entertainment option on a flagship sedan is nuts!

I think MB might be the only co. in the luxury segment that does not offer one.

Mat, I have to say that you seem to be perpetually pissed off with Mercedes Benz. If you want disappointment, buy the Bentley. Then, go out and buy a Lexus for when the Bentley is in the shop. Did you even test drive the car before you bought it, or did you just wing it like you do when you go looking for tshirts to wear under your dress shirts? For your information, the recall on the door latches on MY09 cars are on 54 cars that were in shipment to the dealers. Any dealer worth it's sign out front should have caught the campaign on the cars during the PDI. Distronic Plus is better than you give it credit for. Maybe you shouldn't drive like an A**. Or, get a V1, turn off the K-band, put it in the MidCity case with their integrated display like most D-Plus owners do. And finally, burn your MP3s to a DVD and put it in the changer. As far as build quality, I seem to remember the 2000 S class and the 1992 S class as being very heavy on initial problems. Almost as bad as the 02 7series.

By the way, with the depreciation on the luxury car market like it is, I'll give you $58000 for the S if you still want to trade it in.

That's precisely the problem with folks like nick 55 & marcopolo (I prefer to be a gentleman and not call someone A**es - reflects lack to basic education to me) l am not the one who will setlle for less and with blind-faith bring down the quality and expectations from a so called - "true luxury sedan" - you guys should not even be allowed on this forum. Why should the buyer have to make compromises and not expect MB to deliver ! You guys know, this is ridiculous - the thing about the PCMCIA technology and swapping locks - in this day and age of technology ! - I did test drive this car before I bought it and by the way I am not a genius (or a Smart A**) to check the rear doors for the lock-mixup - so I'd give you that !
take it easy man - seems like its you guys who are more pissed off with my issues with MB

I don't see it on a lot cars. I haven't seen it in person but in pictures it doesn't look very integrated in the back of the head rests.
