the s550 is the way to go I think. Unless the deal on the s400 is good.

Was the S400 an answer to a question no one has asked?

Saw a CPO 2010 S400 with 47k miles at San Francisco M-B. Asking $36,970. I believe the S400 is just a gas 350 with a "light" hybrid system to improve mileage. And the improvement is not that great and they seem to be generally unloved...

see thread "2010 S400 what can you really get for it" which implies they are worth $22-25,000.

I think the consensus is "Get an S550"

I believe the S350 in the US is a Turbo Diesel 3.5 liter V6. The S400 gets a gas 3.5 liter V6 with assist from an electric motor and lithium ion battery pack.

Yeah, there's nothing sexy about a V6 in an S Class. At least the diesel is both exotic and a good performer, especially in low end torque. Really the "right" engine for the car is probably the TTV8 in the 12 and 13

The S350 W221 is a oil burner and gets better gas mileage than the S400 Hybrid

Not Sexy, I disagree, my 2012 oil burner is a head turning, sexy machine!

I thought there was a gas 350. I fixed my comment. The gas 3.5L prior to the new 2012 GDI engine was not a gas saver. We had an 2009 E350 and averaged about 19mpg with about 70% highway driving. The new GDI 3.5 is supposed to average 23mpg (19 city/29 hwy). We haven't had ours long enough to know...

According to Motor Trend here:

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2011/..._benz/s_class/

a 2011 S400 is rated at 19 city, 25 hwy.

Is it bad that I have no idea my MPG? Once a week I put $90 worth of Premium in it and never give it another thought. It's the price you pay for awesome.

You are correct, I forgot about the earlier S350 gas model, I was only speaking about the 2010+ S350 BT 4M sold in the US.
