Need Some Help From Apple Geeks

I've been playing around with the new "Hey Siri" function, in which the device is always listening for the phrase "Hey Siri" followed by a command. (This bypasses the need to physically press and hold the home button like you normally would to activate Siri.) It works well even in the car with music playing. I can say "Hey Siri, send a text to Godzilla I'll be home in an hour" and it will mute the music, compose a text to my wife, read it back to me for approval and then send it all by voice command, then resume music.

I can say "hey Siri read my first email" and it will open email and read the first message aloud.

It will accept verbal song or artist requests, and launch apps. In short, it could be a very powerful and versatile tool in the car.

It would be ideal if I could hide the I-device out of sight and use a tiny external microphone hidden in the car to launch Siri. I was able to get the external mic to work and trigger Siri by voice while the I-device was in the glovebox.

The problem is that Siri's responses cannot be heard over my Bluetooth Audio adapter, or when connected directly to the car's Media Interface. I tried two additional BT audio systems (one in Godzilla's new Q7) as well as one other direct Ipod connection. Nothing I could find on the device (Ipod Touch 5) settings seems to relate to directing where Siri's voice is routed.

Any ideas?

I think I got it. Apple uses the HFP Bluetooth profile to send voice, and the AD2P profile to send audio. I was using an Ipod Touch as the player, which since it's not a phone, has no HFP profile, so Siri's voice couldn't play over the car's speakers. I'll try with an IPhone and see if that works.

Almost there. As suspected, Siri speaks via the IPhone's BT phone connection, not the BT Audio (I use a Tune2Air for BT Audio). Siri and Tune2Air don't get along since Siri tends to hijack the connection and then not release it. But since the IPhone is going to be hidden and ideally all commands and control will be via voice, I'm going to try connecting the Iphone directly to the car's Ipod port, use BT only for phone audio, then run the hidden external mic into the cabin.

Ideally this would allow interactive voice control over tons of stuff, essentially the same functionality as the new Siri "Eyes Free" feature being incorporated into new and upcoming cars. (Eyes Free blanks the device screen and uses voice control for all functions.) The only difference would be the need to say "Hey Siri" to launch her rather than using the steering wheel voice command button.

This feature is now available in the 2014 E Class. Stay tuned.
