4Matic: Does it have more ground clearance?
The following taken from the owner's manual (for 2013):
The nominal ground clearance spec I can find on the W221 is 5.8". The manual is confusing. Does this mean that there is no Sport or Comfort mode on 4Matic?
Also, does the 4Matic have a higher "normal" (and also higher "raised") ground clearance compared to 2WD variants?
Thanks.
The following vehicle levels are possible on vehicles without 4MATIC:
--Normal
--Raised: the vehicle is raised by about 1 in (25 mm) when compared with the normal level
--Lowered: the vehicle is lowered by about 0.60 in (15 mm) when compared with the normal level
The following vehicle levels are possible on vehicles with 4MATIC:
--Normal: in Comfort mode, the vehicle is raised by about 0.40 in (10 mm) when compared with Sport mode
--Raised: in Comfort mode, the vehicle is raised by about 0.60 in (15 mm) and in Sport mode by about 1 in (25 mm) when compared with normal level
--Lowered: the vehicle is lowered by about 0.40 in (10mm) when compared with the normal level

Yes 4matic does have a higher 'normal' height due to the 4matic components mainly at the front axle.. Lower engine oil pan and front control arms had to be modified to accommodate that front axles and differential so the suspension control unit is programmed different from a 2wd... Also normal height can't be truly measured due to the system constantly adjusting ride height due to weight and angle of the vehicle.. The system also raises the car during every start up and lowers it back when turned off/ locked... The system lowers also when in sport mode or at 75-80 mph.. It returns to 'normal' height in comfort or below 35mph...

They both raise back to normal height when in comfort mode.. In sport mode the car automatically lowers... After high speeds and coming to stop try listening for the compressor and that should tell you if it's raising...
