Cigarette lighter illuminated?
I assume that the front cigarette lighter is supposed to be illuminated (ring around the hole)? While I don't smoke, I do sometimes need to plug in my car charger at night, and currently my hole is dark (maybe I could have worded that better).
Assuming it is supposed to be lit, can anyone point me in the right direction for getting to the bulb?

Yes, it is supposed to be lit. Have you tried it to make sure the lighter is working? It could just be a fuse for the light that is burned out.

Unusual that an LED would fail so soon. Any hints as to how to access it? I poked around a bit but wasn't able to find a point of entry

Okay, not the most interesting fix here I'm sure, but resolved the issue without the need for the magic pliers.
I had forgotten that when it comes to Mercedes, if you see a rubber stopper, there's probably a screw hiding underneath. Popped out the two rubber stoppers at the front end of the cup holder, and removed the two Torx screws hidden beneath. Cup holder came out, and the lighter/ashtray assembly was free to remove.
Pulled it out enough to see how power is delivered to the LED (since it was doubtful the LED was bad, and sure enough, one of the two pressure contacts wasn't making sufficient contact with the lighter. Gave it a little nudge inward, turned on the lights, and there was light!
Put everything back together, and I'm in business! Now I can plug in my car charger at night without poking around blindly!

Cigarette lighter led light
I just removed my ashtray console to clean and fix the ash tray. Any pics that can be helpful before I removed it my light was fine but when I reattached my light doesn’t turn on and my cigarette lighter never worked so maybe I can fix it. Any tips guys and pics will be helpful.

fuse under the bonnet.... was a post the other days about making the illumination work - he replaced the bulb

Cigarette lighter LED
Justin Morrison didn’t replace an LED. Something about the contacts not touching. Want to make sure I do it the right way before I go and buy another cigarette lighter. I don’t really care for lighter functionality but the LED light is critical. I know I don’t need to replace the LED it was just working before I removed it.

yes but likely powered by the same source.... if it worked and now it doesn't something is amiss. maybe the fused popped doing the work.. might has well check?

All USA version Mercedes arrive with the “Smoker kit” option.
This can be replaced with the usual ISO 4165 power socket and trinket tray if desired

so I did get the new unit in plugged it in and it works. The cigarette lighter function worked too for a couple tries then I tried one last time and now the button is stuck and I couldn’t get it to pop back out. Has anyone else run into this issue?
otherwise my light is back on and I’m happy

The lighted ring works on my front cigarette lighter, but the receptacle doesn't work. I try to use it for the phone charger and nada, so I use the rear seat cigarette lighter receptacle.

mine has NEVER illuminated like that (which I guess means never did)
if you pop a cigarette lighter in too often it gets so hot it won't hold - when it cools they stay popped in again... keep on doing it, is a good way to melt wires and trim (and could pop a fuse)
if it stays in usually the fuse popped

well there you go 9 years down the line finally bothered to look at this silly fault - THIS thread is 100% spot on on how to reach it on the W221 - and it does make a fault code disappear from the Front SAM diagnostics when its resolved
BUT what a phaff - the instructions here are great, but having undone the two torx screws you take the TWO halves out one by one, first lifting the cup holder then you find of the ashtray just lifts out too giving plenty of room .... but how to remove the plug socket and how to reach the bulb are quite something
having got a super powerful LED light, my powerful glasses on and spent a few mins puzzling on quite how mad the retention clip of the connector block was... I was none the wiser - but fortunately just before destroying everything I discover by accident is slides off sideways WITH NO RETENTION CLIP WHATSOEVER !!!
then how do you get the red/pink bulb holder off the stupid power outlet - more insanity - in the end it kind of pops off sideways having attacked and levered up the easier side of the bulb holder - so force it off in the opposite direction the power connector came off... with it in your hand, yet more insanity on how to reach the conventional pathetic cap-less bulb... that pulls apart at the top, kind of folds in half - but no way to simply pop a clip and pull apart, its brute force pry barring again
my bulb was dead, fitted three new ones - still not a glimmer - its the TERRIBLE design - after years of far too much spring pressure from the electrical contacts arguing with its own mounting bracket and no doubt assisted by the heat of the bulb, it all means its half on the **** and the contacts as described by 'justinmorrison' above, are the second part of the fun as to why nothing happens... with BOTH connections not having sufficient contact to power it up
FYI : needs key in and the headlamps illuminated to operate (auto lights doesn't cut it in daylight)
I have never done a more irritating job on any car in my life - so simple yet so insanely and incompetently designed
