Stupid question but I have to ask...
I am moving up from 18 inch wheels to 20 inch wheels and I have to decide which tires to go with. I really don't know anything about tires (this is my 3rd car I've ever had and I'm 30 years old lol). Most of the I have knowledge of my car I have gathered on MBWORLD so Based on what I understand from reading you guys posts, the Michelin Pilot series which came on my car is the best to go with. The problem is this site I plan to buy the wheels and tires from does not have Michelin so I'm wondering is the Michelin and Continental tires the only tires that ride really smooth on the w221? I know this is a stupid question but I've never seen you guys talk about other types of tires and I kind of don't trust the guy at the place I'm going to get them put on because there are some very shady dealers in Delaware. Sorry to bug you guys but I really need to know. Thank you

Depends on the weather
I went from 18" Michelins to 20" Toyo Proxes T1's a few days ago and the ride is still butter smooth with 0 road noise. I also have ABC in my 600 which may make a difference.
On my 550 I went from 18's to 20" Falkens and the ride is still smooth and quiet but I do feel the road imperfections.
What part of Delaware are you in?

It's about 40 min down 95 from Christiana Mall or you could take 40 straight down but slower with all of the lights.

If you're looking for a high performance all-season tire that lasts a long time, then you might want to consider the Hankook Ventus S1 Noble2 tires. They are highly rated and very inexpensive too.

First Choice Automotive...701 Pulaski Highway. They have one guy that does just wheels - Max. He's done both of my W221's and Range Rovers. It's 22.00 mounted and balanced per tire.

Thanks, the price doesn't matter. Just wondering if I had to go Pirelli, would I be able to.

I've tried a bunch over the years...Dunlops, Conti's, Sumitomos. They all start out quiet and smooth and then quickly wear down, get noisy and have to be replaced. The only tire I've ever had that felt right and lasted a decent amount of time were the Michelin Pilot Sports. Check the tread life warranty on the others (I have no idea what they are) but the Pilots are warrantied for 30k miles in a square set up and 15k when running staggered (can't rotate).

I've heard lots of owners complain that the Pilot Sport A/S tires don't get anywhere near what the mileage warranty states. Many are having to toss them at 20k or less miles. You can get a higher speed rated Hankook (W vs Y) for about $250 less for the set....and get a similarly quiet ride that performs well and lasts longer. You still pay a hefty premium for that Michelin name.

I should clarify, the tire I'm talking about is the ultra high performance summer Pilot Sport 3. I did have a set of the 19" Pilot Sport AS when I bought the car. When I went to 20's I was concerned about degrading the ride quality but the Pilot Sport 3's more than compensated and felt like I hadn't done a Plus One at all.
On the 221, anything you run staggered on the RWD car is going to eat rears at twice the rate of fronts. The car is heavy and the rears take all of the torque needed to get the thing rolling from a stop.
I just ordered a set of rears and tread depth on the fronts still shows 50% remaining. I did get 15k miles out of the rears. The Sumi's, Contis and Dunlops got about 9k out of the rears. At least with the Pilot Sport 3 the tires stay quiet even as they wear. The Sumis, Contis and Dunlops got noisy after 5k miles.

Yea I think I will stick with the Michelin Pilots. Here is another stupid question but as I said, I have never switched wheels before. So I found some Lexani R-Three machined black wheels I am going to buy and I was wondering if I should buy them online and get them shipped directly to my house or go to a shop and let them order?

Doesn't make a difference unless the shop is hiking up the price. Most cases it's cheaper to order the wheels online (a lot of places offer free shipping) as there is no markup from the wheel shop but other than that it's a matter of just transporting the wheels/tires. You can fit a set of wheels and a set of tires in the car.
