Out of Gas - Check Engine Light On
I was totally checked out tonight driving home from work on the freeway in my 2012 S550, when I felt a slight shudder and noticed that seemingly all the lights on the dash lit up. I immediately realized I'd forgotten to get to get gas.
Luckily, a quick 5-lane change got me off the freeway, but I stalled out a block away from a gas station. I tried starting it up a few times, but nothing.
After refueling, the car started back up, but the fuel gauge stayed empty for about 5 minutes. It finally caught up and went to full. However, the check engine light was now on and didn't turn off for the rest of my 20 minute ride home.
I'm nearly 100% certain said light is on because of running out of gas and am hoping this doesn't require a trip to the dealer to reset.
Clues and/or pointers?
Thanks,
M "Jack ***" B

I would at the very least take it to an auto parts store and see if they can pull the codes for you. Ignoring it and seeing if it disappears can be a recipe for disaster.

Had that a few times over the years. The light will go off after a while. No big deal if as described...

Typically the CEL needs the vehicles systems to cycle a few times to realize the problem is solved and it will turn its self off. However as stated above it would be a good idea to just double check what the code is to make sure you are not causing any harm by continuing to drive with the light on.
