Does a custom exhaust lower sale price?
Hi guys,
I have a 2008 CL500 which has a great engine, but the exhaust sound is what I would expect from a small 4 cylinder rather than the 5.5L V8 it comes with. I want to install something that sounds more the the CL63 AMG - I have a link below.
The question I have is - when I sell my car in 1-2 years time, would this custom exhaust lower the car sale price? Or would it be more difficult for me to sell the car?
The exhaust is no louder than an original AMG exhaust and looks exactly the same.
thanks a lot in advance!

It depends on the emission laws for your country. In the United States, it is only legal to make EPA approved modifications. Non-approved modifications will be caught at the time of a required emission inspection as part of vehicle registration renewal and also upon sale of the vehicle.

You can change the exhaust for a meatier sound without touching the catalytic convertors or anything else that might change the emissions. Simply replacing the mufflers with something less restrictive will do it. I have a Becker axle-back exhaust on my S550 and it sounds exactly like you'd expect it to sound. Aggressive but not over the top.
As for resale, it depends on how long you plan on keeping it. Basically any clean high mileage, five or six year old S550 or CL550 is going to be worth around $20k at 80k-100k miles. At that point the exhaust won't make much difference at a dealership, and it might actually help a little if you sell private party. I've owned three S Class. The first one, I was fanatical about keeping it stock. Made little difference at trade in. My 2nd, I did what I wanted with it. It was a base car and I turned it into an AMG Sport by cobbling together the body kit and wheels on Ebay. Also made little difference at trade in. My philosophy is do what you'd like to make the car more enjoyable to you during the time you own it. If it takes a little hit on resale, whatever.
Now if you plan on getting top dollar and trading the car at 50k miles, the exhaust would devalue the car somewhat. Of course you can always keep the stock exhaust on hand and reinstall at trade in time.
