Newbie has ?s about S550 Warranty
Hello Everyone and thank you for reading my post. I am considering trading my Lexus LS for a 2007 S500. Clean car with 56K miles. The dealer is asking $25K, but when I asked about an extended warranty that's when my mouth dropped.
She quoted me an AutoNation Platinum warranty of $16,800 (3 years/36 mi) The shorter term quote, I think it was gold or silver, was like $12,000.
I know that MBs can be expensive to repair, but when she quoted those prices I instantly felt like I needed to bathe the scum off. I dislike dealers.
Can any of you share an estimated cost of an extended warranty? Also are there things I should look for before I consider buying this car? I will do a search, but while you are here reading, do you mind offering your opinion of this beautiful piece of machinery?
Thanks in advance

You should be able to find 3 years of exclusionary coverage for less than 1/3 the cost you've been quoted. Call around to credit unions in your area to see if they offer coverage. Many do....and insist on exclusionary coverage. The LS is a nice car (I've owned 4 of them), but the S-class is far ahead in substance, solidity, and ride. You are smart to look into a service contract as most here will agree that they are a must. If you pay $5k for an exclusionary policy for 3 years of coverage, the odds would be in your favor for being money ahead. Repairs on these cars are very expensive compared to Lexus, and at your starting mileage, you'd be right in that spot where many items begin to fail.

Buying a warranty on an out of warranty S550 is very expensive. Best I could find on my 2012 S550 with 26K miles was $3400 but that is only because I am still under the warranty. I will be purchasing this before the warranty expires which will give me 3 years of use on the car in warranty. I will then promptly sell it. These cars can insert a grenade into your bank account at any time, that is why they depreciate so fast and so bad. They are awesome cars though and I love to drive mine. I will probably buy a 15 or 16 S550 when the warranty is up on the one I have. Unless you have a really good and fair indy mechanic, be prepared for a few big repair bills.

I got those same numbers ($12k to $15k) when I was shopping a CL 550 and I couldn't find any 3rd party company who would write an AMG car at any price. Then again once you're buying the car for $25k, even if worst case it bit you for another $10k over three or four years you're still driving a lot of car for the money.
I was really expecting the bottom to drop out of my 2010 after 50k but it's needed very little beyond the usual oil changes, brakes and tires, now at 85k. Starter motor ($600) was the only critical repair. Some other stuff, leaking seal, glitchy AC controller, leaking cam sensor, I got done because it was free under CPO, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.
