Post Factory Warranty

If there's a thread that's heavily discussed this, pls. provide the link.

If not, I seek advice on what to do. I sold my S and bought a CL550. The factory warranty ceases in June.

I gotta assume a warrant for a CL or S is gonna be the same. That, along w/ having found this 221 board is loaded w/ informed and helpful people.

W/ that said, what are the options and, finally, the BEST option for continuing a warranty coverage? I went naked on my S550. I spent a bundle, albeit over five yrs.

This CL has had some issues and I am surely thankful they were MB's nickel, not mine (directly, at least...). My dlr. shop rate is $150/hr. and parts are pricey, as all know.

Guidance/advice appreciated. Thank you.

How about some more details about your car.....like model year, current miles, number of owners, where and when you purchased it, etc.

Model yr. 2012. 2nd. titled owner off lease. Hit ground/war. started 06.16.12, so good 'till 06.16.16. NDH. Will have less than 35,000 miles total when factory war. dies. I seek a no deductible, likely 5 yr/100,000 miles, add on immy. upon factory war. ending. The low miles should help, as use impacts MTBF on any product/part and at 29,000 current miles, the MTBF for most is a ways off. Perfect world covers stem to stern, set aside wear items.

When I was shopping S vs CL I was surprised at how much more the premium was for a similar equipped CL vs an S. Not sure why. It's tough to find a warranty after the car has been purchased . Dealers usually offer them at time of sale. The other option is to refi the car at your local credit union and bundle a warranty into the refi. My CU is very aggressive about matching or beating interest rates. Worth a shot. Dave has one of the best 3rd party warranties I've seen, on a S600 no less, thru a CU and I believe it was under $4k, but his mileage was in the 30k range which helps.

I was looking at 3 year old CLs with 45k ish miles and to get platinum 3 year coverage from Mercury it was $12k. I ended up going CPO on an S instead.

How's this match up to the mkt.?

5 yr. 100,000 miles nothing excluded for $4750?

Too much? What's the catch? Grab it and run?

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Too good to be true was my gut reaction. Who underwrites it and what's the year and miles on the car?

Find a way to get a warranty through Assurant. Whether its through your credit union or whatever. ASSURANT is the way to go.

Yeah, what a warranty company looks for, in addition to claims history for similar years and miles, is continuity of coverage, because if the car has been continuously under coverage, nothing major is likely to bite them.

You can add an extended MB warranty to any Benz while the original warranty is still in force.

I paid right around this in December for a 2 yr. CPO extended warranty after the factory warranty on my 2013 S550 expires around July 2018. So I basically have a 4.5 year full warranty. It had ~17,300 miles on it.

The stealership's finance and insurance guy has been bugging me worse than a sleazy brother-in-law. He smells a sale.

I know there are arguments for other war. outfits. I also think the repairs gotta be done by an MB franchise, if I go w/ the MB war. But, there is some comfort w/it.

Anyone know if a person can negotiate and chisel on the premium? Betting something costing a grand or more per yr. every yr. for five yrs. is gonna go wrong is a big dice roll. 'Course one even modest thing going wrong and a grand is spent.

Thanks to all for posting. There's been some solid, enlightening advice shared.

I just got this eye opener....these are MB #'s, to the best of my understanding. Abbreviations are # of yrs. covered and # of miles covered.

Model 5yr/75k 5yr/100k 6yr/75k 6yr/100k 7yr/75k 7yr/100k
S, SL, CLS,
Diesel, R $2,700 $3,350 $3,200 $3,850 $4,000 $4,750

Model 5yr/75k 5yr/100k 6yr/75k 6yr/100k 7yr/75k 7yr/100k
CL, G, AMG®
$4,000 $4,750 $5,700 $6,100 $6,700 $7,100

Wowser. Look at the swing in cost between models. Tell me again why I went from S to CL? That more things can go wrong w/ a CL? Stunning.

I have a feeling the CL is higher because they assume the coupe will be driven harder than the S.

Aren't all CLs ABC cars? That might account for some of the spread. Or just the higher MSRP to begin with. I found the same discrepancy when I was shopping. Couldn't justify the huge premium just for the coupe body and cramped rear seats vs the sedan.

Also, the 221 is a hell of a lot better looking than the same gen CL. That CL resembles the old Acura CL's from the late 90's.

The new S-coupe is gorgeous IMO and a lot better looking than the W222. A monstrous upgrade over the CL. Kind of like the upcoming E class compared to the outgoing disgusting car.

Re: Mike5215. Man, roger the rear seats. I have a grown daughter who refuses to ride w/ me, as she got claustrophobic in the rear after one ride. It's stylish and gets compliments, but not as functional as I remember my S. I had been in S's since 1994. Made the switch last April, thinking two door easier entry, not hitting the pillar of the S getting in etc. I am 6'3" 285. Am seriously thinking of jettisoning this and going back.

Yeah, the nose never looked right on the CL. The face lifted 2011 got closer. The center stack and center console were kind of blobby and weird too. Go back one generation though and those CL look good vs the 220. They got the quad round headlamps and looked like a big grand tourer version of the SL from that era rather than a shortened S Class.

Honestly I was shocked how tight the rear seats were in the CL. The car from the outside doesn't look that much smaller than an S but it's all ahead of the A pillar. My daughter (14) also nixed the CL. Not digging the need for Dramamine I guess. Luckily she approved my new C Class but only if she picked the interior colors.
