staggered wheels on 4Matic

What are the rules here with 4Matic cars and staggered wheels. Do staggered wheels mess with the AWD system?

No, as long as the rolling diameter of the rears are within 3% of the fronts. The OEM staggered rim widths and tire sizes for the 221 are fine. Otherwise you just need to do some math. The size calculator on 1010tires.com will show rolling diameter variances for different tire sizes.

Yea the 07-13 w221 with 4-matic doesn't come staggered from factory but the any 2014 w222 4-matic with 19's are staggered. So you also know that if Mercedes is now doing it, they listened to Mike.

Edit. Here you can see it. 07-13 are all the same for 4-Matic and 2014 shows 4-matic being staggered from Mercedes, if it makes you feel safer. The w222 and w221 have the same awd system I think and just about everything under the car is the same anyway.

Mike. Are those the same sizes you recommend? Interesting, 2014+ has smaller front tires than w221 listed.

Thanks, so 1010tires indicates a 2.33% difference in diameters. Is this going to have any effect on the car or operation. Also, this site indicates that my current 255-40-19 tires can accomidate from an 8.5 to a 9.5 wheel. Does this mean I could use my existing tires on a new set of staggered wheels. 19X8.5/19X9.5?

I wouldn't. The point of staggering is to get wider rear tires on the car. Yours will stretch to fit but they'll look stretched. I'd use the sizes Wilassasin posted.

Ya, I will probably buy the wider tires and just keep the two narrower ones as spares as I think the fronts wear out faster than the rears anyway. At least that is what I have heard.

Maybe on AWD. On RWD the rears last half as long as the fronts.

I'll take the credit Mike but Jason posted those sizes. Lol. Hey, when's that New C coming? I'm sure that thing will be a beast!

Well, the swap went fine and the new fat meats are on the back. with staggered wheels and tires within 2.3% of each other in diameter, I am not getting any light show on the dash or issues with the brakes. Love the aggressive stance but need to order some longer bolts to put the spacers back on.

I'd check the manufacturer site for the rolling diameter of the tires. 1010 Tires said that mine were different sizes but when I went on the pirelli site it said that both my 245 30 22 and 295 25 22 had a rolling diameter of 27.8 in which would make it safe for an AWD.

On the 4-matic, do you guys rotate tires if they're all the same size? I guess you should if the front wear faster on 4-matic.

Hmmm. 245 mm tread width X a sidewall ratio of 30% = a 82.5 mm sidewall height up front.

295 x .25 = 73.75 mm sidewall height in the rear.

Double check my math but isn't that around an 11% variation?

I rotate my tires on my 4Matic.

Here is a little diagram from tire rack I read a while back because I had your exact question when I put new tire on my 4Matic.

No guarantees, I put staggered wheels and tires on mine a few hundred miles ago and it seems to be fine. My front and rear are within 2.5% of each other in rolling diameter but there are so many conflicting posts on the different sites with some saying you will slowly blow up the diff and others calling BS. Not sure what to do at this point. I may go to a bigger front tire just to get the diameter closer to spot on.

Mike, so on a w221 4-matic, to be within spec, what sizes would it work out to be for a 20" wheel and 21"?

I've been doing the same for many years. But of course with identical tires front and rear.
